In this article, we’ve gathered a selection of real reviews from customers who had unfortunate encounters with flies while dining out. All of the restaurant names used in the reviews have been redacted. The point of this article is not to shame restaurants, but to put into perspective how damaging flies can be for the reputation of your business.
When customers see flies buzzing around their table or food, it leaves a lasting impression that can quickly translate into scathing online reviews, negative word of mouth, and a loss of loyal customers. These reviews demonstrate how flies affect your business and reputation. After all, in the competitive world of hospitality, maintaining a clean and pest-free environment is just as crucial as offering delicious food and excellent service. Reputation is crucial.
1) A Meal Ruined By Flies!
I was recommended ________ by many in the area for its delicious food and beautiful water setting. My two teenage children and I made reservations at the restaurant in advance although it was not necessary as there was plenty of seating still available. The staff were very well mannered and professional and answered all of our questions. When our food arrived our experience began to change as it was not a pleasant and enjoyable dinner as expected, I have never seen so many flies in my life than at this restaurant, they were EVERYWHERE! It was near impossible to keep them out of our food and we had to keep an eye and hand on our dinner at all times so that it was not covered by the flies! Looking across the restaurant you can see others “swatting” at their dinner. The food was delicious but the flies really took away from the experience. I know that this is out of the their control or it was just a bad night with the flies. Every hour they had a tarpon that was fun to watch, the fish were HUGE and remained by ________ the whole time as people launched and threw their food across the restaurant into the water, seriously. Yes it is an expensive restaurant but it is like this everywhere on the island. Hopefully I get the chance to return to ____________ as the food is wonderful!
2) Good Food, ok service BAD bugs!
Food was ok, but our server had a hard time with sequencing and timing. That was a little bothersome. If I was only rating the food, it would be 4 stars, but the service timing was quite off. The big problem were the bugs… it had rained, as it does most afternoons, and this was the first place we experienced this problem. Not sure why this place a problem and the others didn’t. The restaurants knows they have an issue because they have cans and cans and cans of bug spray ready for guests. Some people chose to go inside instead of finishing at their waterside table. Almost all others covered themselves in bug spray. It was either mosquitoes or sand flies (this seems to be what locals say it is). Either way, they were biting little annoying things… without that it would have been a more enjoyable dinner.
3) Overall an okay visit. Little flies put me off eating a bit.
Generally a nice experience however there were little flies flying around our food which was very off putting. Some of the meats were also dry surprisingly as we had a early dinner. Also no kids menu but plenty of kids in the restaurant.
4) Good food, slow service, and terrible bugs.
Came here for dinner as it was recommended by my hotel. Let’s say they were right 4/5 times with good recommendations. The food was really good, but we had to rush due to mosquitoes biting us and little flies going in our drinks 3 times, I’m not even sure about my food. The setting is nice just sucks we couldn’t enjoy. The I can see how some say it is under staffed since we had to wait forever to find our waitress every time.
Can you see how flies affect your business and reputation?
5) Too many flies
I don’t know if its a normal thing but when we were there in October there were so many little flies it was hard to eat food because they kept landing on it. We got some fish and chips and some little desserts.
6) Overpriced mediocre food with good sunset view but ruined by all the flies.
The restaurant has a beautiful outdoor dining patio, but then it’s all down hill from there. Had dinner here yesterday. The view was great, the food was average. But we were literally attacked by flies. We asked to move tables but that didn’t help. To make a bad dinner worse, there was hair in both our plates.
7) Flies everywhere!
The other day, I visited a prominent restaurant and sat at the bar for dinner. I noticed a few small insects flying about. And then one landed in my companion’s wine. I guess a member of the staff overheard me saying “damn fruit flies!” because he interjected, “They’re not fruit flies — they’re flies.” Then a senior staffer got wind of the fruit fly conversation quietly going on at the bar and spoke up: “We don’t have fruit flies in this restaurant, but the regular flies we can’t do anything about.” The door and windows were open. Then the other guy felt the need to add, “They’re just really, really small flies.” Meanwhile, another tiny insect had landed in my friend’s wine. These were definitely fruit flies. These flies affect your business and reputation heavily, we will not be back!
8) Not terrible but there are better choices for the price
_______ was recommended by the concierge at our hotel. But, all the locals (dive staff, store clerks, etc.) all said, “Do NOT eat at_________!” We wish we had heard that first.
Service was good. Just don’t show up when they open at 6:00. The entire staff will be in the parking lot smoking and ask you what you want. They want you to make reservations and act as if you may not be able to be seated without them. However, the restaurant was never full the few hours we were there. The food was decent yet expensive and the portions where tiny, everyone left hungry.
Flies and gnats were a problem the night we ate at ________. They actually where landing on our plates and we had to constantly fan over our food. This was in addition to the large oscillating fans that made conversation nearly impossible. Hopefully that is not typical. In addition, for the prices they charge real tables would be nice. The tables are flimsy plastic tables and chairs. They are the cheap plastic ones you can buy at the big box stores in the US. They actually placed sugar packets under the legs when they seated us because the table was leaning. That didn’t help the stability of the materials. A few minutes later the waiter accidently brushed the table while setting the bread basket down and all the water glasses all splashed the table soaking the linens. No one blinked or said a word. In addition, the plastic chairs are too big and do not fit under the table.
Wouldn’t recommend or eat here again!
