A quick Google search reveals that naturally strong scents such as lavender, peppermint, citronella, catnip, cinnamon, eucalyptus and lemongrass are known to repel flies. However, it is worth noting that The Fly Lady spray does not have any strong scents and is unnoticeable. Our product targets the flies not through scent but by pyrethrin. What is the most common fly in Australia?

The most common fly found in Australia is the House Fly, brought here by early European Settlers. House Flies are found in homes, commercial kitchens, stores, factories, and farms, meaning they are everywhere in Australia. Their population increases in November when summer starts to set in. They are typically attracted to the scent of food. They can be avoided through keeping your venue clean, keeping your doors closed and using The Fly Lady spray

How do I identify a type of fly?

House flies are approximately the the size of a fingernail, with a dark brown or black appearance, red eyes, transparent wings, and four stripes on its body. Known for their distinctive buzzing sound. Fruit flies are much smaller, around the size of a grain of sand, with a reddish-brown color and no audible sound.

Which flies are harmful in Australia?

A variety of flies can be harmful, however it is important to note that flies themselves are not lethal, they can be harmful because of the bacteria they carry.

House Flies are notorious for spreading bacteria because they feed and breed on decaying organic matter such as feces, garbage and rotting food. They will also land on food in your venue if given the chance. This allows for harmful cross-contamination. House Flies carry bacteria such as E. Coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens. These bacteria can lead to food poisoning, urinary tract infections, typhoid fever, dysentery, skin infections and gangrene.

Fruit Flies are less harmful than House Flies but can still contaminate food with microbes from decaying fruit or dirty surfaces. Fruit Flies can carry bacteria such as Acetobacter and Klebsiella. These can cause respiratory infections and foodborne illnesses. Additionally, Fruit Flies can carry various yeasts and molds. This can spoil food and occasionally cause health issues, especially to immunocompromised individuals.

These two flies are the most commonly seen fly species in restaurants. Generally they are not dangerous and these listed effects rarely occur. Nevertheless it is still important to be educated on the potential effects flies can have on your customers.

Other fly breeds than can be dangerous are:

Blowflies: can often lay eggs in wounds, leading to myiasis. They also can carry Clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism.

Sand Flies/ Midgies: Can transmit Leishmania parasites, causing leishmaniasis, a potentially severe skin or systemic disease.

Horse Flies: are known for their bite, which is painful but usually harmless.

This frequently asked question often stems from fear, but once again, flies themselves are not generally dangerous, its the bacteria they carry!
